Tim Cook and an AR/VR Headset Concept

Story

The AR/VR headset. A device that has garnered insurmountable amounts of hype that goes back up to 5 years ago. The release of this headset has been postponed and rescheduled more times than you can imagine, but it seems like the wait is over and it’s pretty much certain that the headset will be released on the 5th of June, at WWDC2023.

But judging by the title, I’m sure you’re here to know why you should care or be bothered about the release of this headset. In all of 2022, Apple released 16 products. So why should the AR/VR headset not just be considered as another one of those products, sold and presented in the same event-style format as all the others? With nothing special to it, just another cog in a well-functioning machine of Apple products that seamlessly interact with one another in a flourishing ecosystem.

Well… you should care, and here’s why.

My Take

For starters, Apple’s AR/VR headset will be the first product of significant magnitude that would have been worked on, designed, prototyped, and tested solely during Tim Cook’s reign as CEO. So he’s probably taking this product series seriously, as this could be a big part of his future legacy as Apple CEO.

Secondly, the headset which will be released, at WWDC23 may be heavily software-oriented, because WWDC is a software event. And I’m intrigued to see how Apple make this a part of their ecosystem, tying it to all other Apple products (probably mainly the iPhone), and making as little effort as possible on the Android side of things.

And the final reason is one of the most important… at least for me. And it is that Apple's official release of an AR/VR headset will effectively force large competitors such as Google and Samsung to take their own steps to enter the AR/VR technology field. And the fact that I trust these companies to make respectable products in their own right, combined with the increased competition this will bring to the AR/VR industry, is only a plus for customers looking to buy this tech.
