Story

The rumour of USB-C coming to the iPhone does its yearly rounds in the build-up to an iPhone release. And, if history is anything to go by, these leaks and rumours have remained leaks and rumours, never coming to fruition.

In a recent interview, Joanna Stern sat down with Apple Executives Craig Federighi and Greg "Joz" Joswiak to discuss USB-C potentially coming to the iPhone. In this interview, Joz stated that the company will “comply” with changes made by governments but believe it will be better if customers didn’t have such a prescriptive government.

This response implied that if the company is left with no other choice, they would have to make the necessary changes to their product line. But if it was up to them, they believe companies should be allowed to make their own decisions regarding the production of their smartphones.

My Take

Joz might’ve had a point when he said that Apple switching to USB-C may hinder innovation in the smartphone charging cable industry. But that argument is null and void as it’s pretty obvious to see that the next big step in charging smartphones is going fully portless.

Although most people at the moment seem to be very happy about the prospect of USB-C coming to the iPhone, I think there is a possibility that Apple hastens the transition from lightning to MagSafe in order to completely avoid having to switch to USB-C. This is because even though EU laws might force the company’s hand, I don’t think it’ll make much sense for Apple to ask their customers to go from Lightning to USB-C and then to MagSafe in the space of 4-5 years.

Overall, this change in direction would be a massive win for consumers (if it happens) as this would allow for a more seamless cable management experience for the majority while providing buyers with an objectively better cable.
