Apple Watch Ultra

Story

At the ‘Far Out’ event, Apple released the Apple Watch Ultra. This is a new watch series for Apple and their first iteration of a watch aimed at extreme athletes.

The Apple Watch Ultra has a titanium casing at 49mm, up to 2000 nits of brightness, and louder sound as a result of the dual speaker system. The Apple Watch Ultra is extremely durable partly due to a barely noticeable lip around the screen to protect it from impact and the sapphire front crystal. Apple also added an action button which can be customized to perform whatever action you want, along with the digital crown being larger for better grip. The battery life on the Apple Watch Ultra is head and shoulders above every other Apple Watch with up to 36 hours of use on a single charge.

Apple added many features such as temperature sensing, the blood oxygen sensor etc. There are also a plethora of specialised programs that warrant the ‘Ultra’ name like pro running features, compass, and depth gauge. All of which are aimed at athletes for a particular sport. Backtrack to track when you’ve been, Emergency SOS, and Crash Detection are all on the watch to keep users safe.

My Take

I think the Apple Watch Ultra is a very capable smartwatch option for extreme athletes. The device will be overkill for most users, but it could be a viable alternative to other extreme smartwatches.

In my opinion, the Apple Watch Ultra has better software than most other extreme smartwatches. Though in some departments, it slightly lacks hardware on par with the competition. A good example is that the Apple Watch Ultra can only go 100 metres deep in water but sometimes divers go well below that level.

Having said that, the Apple Watch Ultra is a very good all-around device for extreme athletes, and I think Apple did a good job introducing itself into this market.

Overview

The Apple Watch Ultra comes in Starlight, Green, and Orange. Starting at $799.
