Apple's New 10th Gen iPad Has Some Issues...

Base iPad (10th Generation)

Story

About a month ago, Apple released their 10th Gen Base iPad and the rumours of Apple transitioning to a design without the home button were true, as this iteration of the Base iPad mirrored the design of other iPads Apple sells such as the iPad Mini and iPad Pro.

Coming with iPadOS 16, the iPad 10th Gen had an all-screen redesign meaning Touch ID is now housed in the power button. The 10.9-inch liquid retina display gives users a first-class experience when it comes to content consumption. The base iPad is powered by the A14 Bionic which is the same processor used in the iPhone 12. This gives the device increased speed and efficiency. The ultrawide 12MP selfie camera was repositioned to the centre of the long side of the device and the rear cameras are now 12MP with support for 4K video. The accessories were the sticking point of this device but there were some positives. The magic keyboard folio has a more responsive keyboard (with a function row) and the Apple Pencil (although 1st Gen) enables creatives to do more with their iPads.

My Take

I’m a big fan of the more clean-looking and modern iPad 10 design. Although it’s been due a change for some time now, I think Apple did a good job implementing this look.

One of the main discussions had after this release was about Apple Pencil support for the Base iPad. Not only does this device only support the 1st Gen Apple Pencil, but it also can only be charged via a lightning cable which means a dongle would have to be bought to charge the Apple Pencil from the iPad. This approach from Apple has received much backlash from tech enthusiasts and even regular iPad users. To be honest, all the criticism Apple has received from this decision is deserved.

I think this iPad 10 will be a tough buy for consumers as this year, it received a pretty significant price bump of $120, putting the cheapest iPad at a starting price of $449.
