Our First Look at the Google Pixel Fold!

Google Pixel Fold Renders

Story

Recent reports from Front Page Tech have shown us renders of what we should expect the unannounced Google Pixel Fold to look like. The renders depict a device not glaringly different from other foldables but with a few distinct features that make it stand out.

From what the renders have shown us, we can see that the Pixel Fold has an unorthodox rear camera design that doesn’t bleed into the side of the phone like the Pixel smartphones. When the device is folded open, the top and bottom bezels are slightly thicker than the side bezels, the front-facing camera uses under-display tech, and although it’s up for debate since we’re viewing renders, it seems the hinge is pretty well hidden and won’t be an eye-sore to users.

One more thing. It reportedly starts at $1,799.

My Take

In terms of what the render says the Pixel would look like, I’m not a fan of the thick top and bottom bezels or under-display front-facing camera when the device is folded open. Apart from that though, I don’t think any of this phone’s differences (such as the rear camera design) would be deal-breakers if I were to consider buying the device.

We’ll always have limited knowledge of this device until it’s fully released, but from what we know so far, I would liken the Pixel Fold to the Google Pixel 6, in the sense that, it’s not the most eye-catching device in terms of raw numbers but it is a reliable device that can compete with the very best in the market. It also has a design that’s not the norm compared to other devices and a better-than-average, top-tier Google software experience (when there are no bugs).

Like other foldables, the reported starting price of $1,799 tells me this won’t be the device that would cause a mass shift from conventional smartphones to foldables, as it was always going to be a big ask to get buyers to pay upwards of $2,000 for a smartphone.
